Day 11 – Hello Headwind
Thursday, June 18th
Corsicana, TX to Waco, TX
The ride to Waco was very dull; we fought a heavy headwind or
crosswind the entire day with no relief. We stopped in Dawson and
Mt Calm, each time exhausted and hungry. I was unable to stomach much
more than some fruit and a little DP – I even turned down a Reese’s
bar – but something was better than nothing.
The one highlight of the trip came a few miles outside of Waco when a
white truck pulled up next to me and started honking. Tired,
exasperated and a little busy, I ignored it. But when the honking
didn’t stop, I glanced over and saw the Salado Fudge Lady! I radioed
Dad the good news. At first he didn’t understand and was working too
hard to care, but when I repeated myself we all excitedly pulled over
into a parking lot to visit.
Each time Dad or I have biked through Salado, we always stop at the
Mud Pies Pottery shop for some of their amazing fudge. That’s how we
met Tisha, who is also a cyclist. She happened to be on her way to
Little Rock (via Corsicana) for a ride with a friend of hers when she
saw us on the Southbound shoulder, turned around and came to say hi.
We didn’t get to visit long, but after such a miserable day it really
was a treat to run into her. Plus she told us about a new concoction Jess’ Turtlicious Fudge that was waiting for us at the Salado shop. We promised to stop by for some on our way South from Waco.
We arrived at my boyfriend’s house around 2, just as the heat became
really unbearable. Lee came home from work to let us in and
encouraged us to relax until dinner. I fell asleep and didn’t wake
until he arrived home from work, sometime after 5. He bought us a big
fried chicken dinner – the first real meal I’d had all day. I didn’t
eat much, but the little I had seemed to help a lot.
We had all been invited to a friend’s place for a casual gathering,
but Lee needed to rest so Dad and I went and really enjoyed the evening. Dad got to meet a bunch of my Waco friends and we even got to see Caitlin (from Tyler) again!
We planned to have Dad stay with my aunt in Crawford, but Mary (our hostess) offered to have Dad stay in the 2nd bedroom of the house. We took her up on it to save me from a few trips out to Crawford and back. Thank you Mary!
